Hello Fellow Members,
We’re solidly into our Legislative session and I wanted to provide everyone with an update.
On Wednesday Februyary 6th I testified on a house bill regarding Domestic Violence. The bill would expand the definition of DV to include “coercive control”. Very briefly coercive control is when on partner yields total control over another through fear/intimidation. This is the kind of call Officers get where they discover that the victim isn’t allowed to drive, have a phone, etc. Just to clarify this is NOT a stand alone offense, just adding a definition to 13-3601 to let Officers/Probation document these circumstances. The bill passed committee.
I attended an important meeting with Arizona Police Association, FOP, and all the Fire representatives on Wednesday as well. For those of you that don’t know, we are once again facing several bills that target our paycheck deductions, our ability to meet and organize etc. We’ve been dealing with these bills for the last several years, and all members should know that every Police and Fire Association in the state stand unanimously in oppoisition to these bills.
In more positive news, there are a couple of good bills making their way through the Legislature. One would provide insurance benefits for a surviving spouse/dependent of a Officer killed in the line of duty. Another would provide money to law enforcement personnel to purchase body armor. These are great bills and I’ll keep everyone updated on them.
On another note, it’s come to my attention that many of you are currently facing or will soon face contract negotiations with your respective agencies. As always, I’m available to assist with speaking with your management or creating working plans designed to increase your member’s benfits.
Hope all is well!
